WWBD:Iwo Jima
After his request to return to the fleet was approved he was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division during the invasion of Iwo Jima. On February 19, 1945 he was serving as a machine-gun section leader in action against Japanese forces on Red Beach II. During the battle, the Japanese concentrated their fire at the incoming American troops from heavily fortified blockhouses staged throughout the island. With his unit pinned down, Basilone made his way around the side of the Japanese positions until he was directly on top of the blockhouse. He then attacked with grenades and demolitions, single handedly destroying the entire hostile strong point and its defending garrison.
He then fought his way over toward Airfield Number 1 and later aided a friendly tank which was trapped in an enemy mine field under intense mortar and artillery barrages. He guided the heavy vehicle over the hazardous terrain to safety, despite heavy weapons fire from the Japanese forces. As he moved along the edge of the airfield, an exploding mortar shell instantly killed him. For his actions during the battle of Iwo Jima he was posthumously approved for the Marine Corps' second highest decoration for bravery, the Navy Cross.[6]

St. Mary's High School, Rutherford, NJ Graduate 'Class of 1938' 'Robert Leckie' Author Of 'Helmet For My Pillow' Is To Be Featured in HBO's 10 Part Miniseries 'The Pacific'!

2009-09-26

WWBD: The little town of Rutherford, NJ just 8 miles west of New York City and the home of the famous poet William Carlos Williams now has another writer getting his due. Robert Leckie, the author of numerous World War II books, is going to have his book 'Helmet For my Pillow' used to make the new 10 part HBO miniseries 'The Pacific'.

See Trailer
The Pacific.

Although Mr. Leckie wrote mostly war books he also wrote 'Lord What A Family' an amusing book about Robert Leckie growing up in the relatively small town of Rutherford, NJ with his 7 brothers and sisters. A true war hero Leckie was a modest family man known and loved by so many people in Rutherford.
Alice McCabe Kelly, 94, of Sea Girt, NJ, recalls visiting the Leckies almost daily back in the 1920's and 30'. She was very close friends with Leckie's sister Elizabeth Leckie Salerno. Mrs. Kelly was asked recently about Bob Leckie and she said 'She had never met a young man with such a diverse and extensive vocabulary'.
Leckie who died on December 24, 2001 is known as one of the most prolific and outstanding writers about World War II. He was very effective as a writer because he actually fought and survived the horrific conditions and battles to write about World War II, and gave credit to so many brave young men who gave their lives for the United States of America.
The HBO, 10 part miniseries, is a follow up to the 2001 series 'Band of Brothers' that series took place in the European Theater. This series 'The Pacific' will feature three marines including Bob Leckie and will also use the book 'With the Old Breed' by Eugene Sledge. The new series will tell the story of both Leckie, Sledge and a third marine John Basilone, a well known war hero from New Jersey.
The 10 part HBO series had a budget of close to 200 million dollars. It is being produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman.

It is truly an exciting time for the Borough of Rutherford, NJ., and for all those who attended and graduated from the small parochial high school that opened in 1929. Alice McCabe Kelly who graduated in the first class in 1933 remembers Robert Leckie well for many reasons, ' Bob was the baby in the family, the youngest of eight children and he was my brother Edward McCabe's closest friend'. 'They played basketball, football and baseball as youngsters and remained friends all their lives'.
The series is due to start in March of 2010.

The 10 part series 'The Pacific' is growing in popularity globally as web sites and blogs are opening all over the internet. WWBD was fortunate to meet Alice McCabe Kelly, who has been able to fill in so many aspects of Robert Leckies life as a youngster, through his school years, and and throughout his adult life. He was a high school sports reporter and a member of the 1936 St. Mary's, Rutherford, NJ State Championship basketball team.
His Dad did not want him to play football in high school so he took up writing about the game instead.
Mr. Leckie who later became an Associated Press (AP) writer had an outstanding vocabulary and and an extraordinary skill to write down notes on paper what he and his fellow marines were feeling while going though the good times and the horrors of war.
The upcoming series 'The Pacific' should be a terrific series that should go down as one of the best ever.

Brian Wilson's CD 'That Lucky Old Sun' Rated Triple 'A' By Worldwide Business Directory!
2008-10-02

WWBD: At my first listen, the new CD ''That Lucky Old Sun' produced by Brian Wilson and with help from collaborators Van Dyke Parks and Scott Bennett, was a special moment, but as listened to it over and over it is no doubt a masterpiece. Brian Wilson, of the famed Beach Boys, along with brother's Carl and Dennis, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine changed the rock and roll world forever with close to one hundred popular hits that are legendary. The album 'Pet Sounds' is considered by many music experts to be the best album of all time.
Listen carefully to 'That Lucky Old Sun' and make sure you remember that the person who wrote these songs is the greatest musical person of the past 50 years. Considered by fellow musicians he sits alongside the greatest classical musicians the world has known.
It is not that his music is 'snappy' as Tom Hanks may describe it but 'infamous' as I would describe it.
I have actually read some people make negative comments about the CD because it is not a 1964 hit. Brian Wilson has aged, and with age has come perfection. Perfection in his melodies, in his harmonies. Yes his voice is not the one that sang 'Don't Worry Baby' or 'Surfer Girl' in falsetto. You just have to buy the CD, get in your car, and drive around and stop now and then and read the lyrics.
You will be amazed when he describes depression in 'Midnight's Another Day'. How he misses his brothers and the life they had for a time when they were all happy in 'Southern California'. The rock and roll in 'Going Home'. In 'Oxygen to the Brain' he describes the wasted years of doing nothing and hurting his body. In 'Mexican Girl' he writes and sings about the Spanish influences in his life. He takes us all back to the boardwalk in 'Venice Beach' that any east or west coast person can remember from their childhood or teen years.
I will close that we are so fortunate as people who care for music to have Brian Wilson still singing and producing. Thank you to Brian Wilson and to all those who have helped him back to a life where he can enjoy happy times too.

Thank you,
John F. Kelly

Baseball Bat Found in New Jersey Signed by Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, And Ty Cobb!Formerly Owned By Cooperstown, NY Mayor Ross Young! Only Bat With Those Three Signatures!
2008-08-10

WWBD: The rarest of the rare signed baseball bats was found recently in the attic of a New Jersey house. The owner of the bat a man in his late fifties had forgotten about purchasing it 15 years earlier. He discovered after researching the signatures that it is the only baseball bat signed by those three Hall of Fame players. Ruth, Gehrig and Cobb by far are the greatest of an era of sports stars in the history of sports.
The owner, John F. Kelly, has said he would like to auction it off and put the proceeds to see that Lou Gehrig has an official induction into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY up on the stage like all the other players.
. Kelly discovered during his research that back in 1939 that a week after they inducted the 12 original members into the HOF that Gehrig became ill. When it became apparent that he was not going to survive the terrible disease that in November of the same year (1939) that the sports writers did a quick vote and verbally inducted Lou Gehrig into the HOF. He was notified by a phone call of this great achievement.

To be fair to the HOF committee in 1939 they did not want him to go in with the second class in 1940, so they made him the 13th original member or the 1939 class. What Mr. John F. Kelly of Sea Girt, NJ would like to see is the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball have a special induction for Mr. Gehrig so he has his due day in Cooperstown, NY like every other player inducted.
Mr. Kelly said 'What ever I can do just please let me know and we can have an auction and apply the money to make the HOF day come true for Mr. Lou Gehrig!
There is no question on the authenticity of the bat as The Ty Cobb Museum has authenticated Mr. Cobbs signature and the bat was owned last by the widow of Mr. Ross, the Cooperstown, NY Mayor (1955-56) who helped in the formation of the original induction ceremony in 1939. Ms. Margeret Young shortly before her death in 1992 sold the bat to the 'The Home Plate' an old store in Cooperstown who all knew Ms. Young. The bat then went to Kelly when Dave Hargrove owner of the store sold it to a friend of Kelly's and it was stored away.

How To Recognize A Stroke Victim!!!
First Three Hours Critical!!!

2005-12-15

This information below may save your life or the life of a friend or loved one!!! This is especially helpful when you are in the company of family and people of your own age group!

Recognizing a Stroke
----- A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed an getting to the patient within 3 hours which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
1. *Ask the individual to SMILE.
2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
3. *Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today)

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

A cardiologist says if everyone who reads this article and tells a family member, friend or worker and they tell other people you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
BE A FRIEND AND SHARE THIS ARTICLE WITH AS MANY FRIENDS AS POSSIBLE, you could save their lives.

How To Determine A Two Way Mirror In A Bathroom or Hotel Etc.!!!
2005-08-17

TWO WAY MIRRORS

I thought it was quite interesting! And I know in about 30 seconds you're going do what I did and find the nearest mirror.... Often heard about the interested.

Do you know how to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not? This is not to scare you, but to make you aware. A policewoman who travels all over the U.S. and gives seminars and techniques for businesswomen passed this on.

When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror they can see you, But you can't see them)? There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms. It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by just looking at it.

So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror we are looking at? Just conduct this simple test:

Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror.

However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE, FOR IT IS a 2-WAY MIRROR!

'No Space, Leave the Place' So remember, every time you see a Mirror, do the 'fingernail test.' It doesn't cost you anything.

Remember: 'No Space, Leave the Place'

Ladies: Share this with your girlfriends, sisters, daughters, etc.

Men: Share this with your wives, daughters-in law, mothers, girlfriends and/or friends.

And to my friends...please pass this mail on to all your online friends.

Remember: 'No Space, Leave the Place' -- Better safe than sorry

However always be aware of the possibility of camera's in vents and smoke detectors. On the floor etc. It is a very filthy world out there!!!

People have been writing in asking about the sign of the devil using the 666 number. It makes you think when you read the calculations on the home page.
